Mr. Grannnnnnt!

When I was growing up, I liked to watch Marlo Thomas in That Girl. But I wanted to be Mary Richards from Mary Tyler Moore.

I rented all the MTM episodes this fall from Netflix, in order by season, and was pleasantly surprised at how well they've held up through time. In fact, in some ways they were more enjoyable, because I was relating to them as an adult, not a tween or teenager. Before Sex and the City, there was Mary, Rhoda and Phyllis. Not as raunchy or sexually explicit, but sexually active and single in the city. Mary was classy, independent, strong, had a fabulous apartment, and she had a rewarding job she turned into a career. She had fabulous clothes. She was loyal to her friends. I had little idea at the time I was watching in the '70s what a subliminal influence Mary was, but when I look back on it now, I see parallels. I moved to the city. Worked in the media. Am a clothes horse......

    The past few times I've come from the hairdresser my "do" has been decidedly "Mary Tyler Moore". Years ago I would have killed for this flip. Now...not so sure. Actually, Rhoda was always my favorite of the girls. She's the one I envied the most.

    That was a great show. I'll always remember Rhoda's quip about eating chocolate: "I might as well apply it directly to my hips!"

    You know I vaguely remember That Girl. My Mom used to watch it. But I was little. But I ahve to say I do love Netflix!

    I loved Mary. I've refrained from renting the old shows I loved as a kid, because the few I have rented I've always thought, what the heck was I thinking??

    I LOVED The MTM Show! I also loved Bob Newhart; they were the two shows our whole family could agree on. I remember sitting together and laughing with my Dad, but secretly thinking "I bet when he's at work, he's exactly like Mr. Grant!!" I can still remember that last episode, and my mom all teary eyed (with her frosted bouffant).

    I wanted the big "M" for my wall and it's not even my initial! I watched all the spin-off shows too, but nothing compared to the magic of that cast working together. I wonder how many of those episodes are on 'play now' on Netflix....I'm going to have to check it out!

    Hi There, WOW, I thought I was the only one on the internet who grew up watching That Girl. I thought she was fabulous and remember one episode when she said she had a little over $200.00 in the bank. I was so WOW'd by that and dreamed some day I too would have $200.00 in the bank.     reading your blog . how easily we are fooled by names. sex in the city, before that did they only have sex in the sticks. or was that Mr ed the talking horse, mind you cant say owt on that subject look at Pig. the best ever film to come out of the uk.

    I bet that would be so fun to watch those. I loved watching them back in the day as well. I never watched Sex in the City.
    I have settled for sex in the country (tee,hee) and no longer a cloths horse as no where to wear them. Pretty much t-shirts, jeans and boots. but throw on some lip gloss and it helps.
