Holiday Movies

Because of all the 'medical drama' this holiday we missed all the traditions, the family and friend visits, the parties, presents, church service, and well -- fun. Another thing I missed was my regular screening of holiday movies. Some I got to because over the years I seem to have developed more or less a routine and order to them, and had watched them before poor Excy went into the hospital.

My routine seems to be to watch "Miracle on 34th Street"* on or the day after Thanksgiving, since it begins with Macy's parade.

We wait to buy a live tree around the 14th or 15th, and it's my job to decorate the house and tree, with the exception of stringing the lights and putting out the lighted reindeer on the lawn. I must do this with a holiday movie on in the background. This varies according to whim. Either "The Bishop's Wife," "Holiday Inn" or "Holiday Affair."

During Christmas week, L. comes over for an afternoon screening of "Christmas in Connecticut," and I will catch up on "White Christmas" and the others I haven't seen yet. I also like "Meet John Doe" and "It's a Wonderful Life," but I got burned out on watching IAWL every year and put it aside. On Christmas Eve I watch "Scrooge."** I am also sentimental about "Meet Me in Saint Louis" mostly because when Judy Garland sings Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas I tear up every time, but I don't have it on DVD and it's usually on TCM while we're at Christmas mass.....

This year, I spent New Year's eve watching "The Thin Man" movies and doing a mountain of laundry while Excy slept down the hall. On New Year's day we watched his favorite movie, "Harvey."***

Do you have holiday movies you must watch? Surely I am not the only one as anal as this??

* Please! Only the original classic versions! No remakes equal the quality of the classics.
**With the exception of "Scrooge" -- I prefer the 1950s version with Allistar Sims to the '30s movie with Reginald Owen......if only because of the haunting song they use throughout, Sarah Owen....
*** I hope Spielberg doesn't f--k it up -- why he feels it needs to be remade I have no idea.....

A, I did receive your lovely card and magnet through snail mail and thought that I thanked you for it. My apologies for being rude. THANK YOU again and again for it. I love the Apache quote, it is so true.

Oh and I've seen all versions of "An affair to remember" I'm not sure that anyone has seen the original film not the Carey Grant/Deborah Carr version from 1957 but the 1939 film with Irene Dunn and Charles Boyer the original title was "Love Affair" remade with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening in 1994. I highly recommend it annually.

I love the Christmas Story. The one about the boy who wants the BeeBee gun for Christmas. Mostly because my grandson looks just like Ralphie!

I adore "Holiday Inn" and who can resist a young Natalie Wood in "Miracle...".
My absolute fav is "A Christmas Story" bc the uproarious laughter from my home can be heard from a distance when we watch it.

You know I love Meet Me in St. Louis. More recently I've gotten into the habit of watching Nightmare Before Christmas. And sometimes "Bad Santa," but I don't have that on DVD.

I love "It's a Wonderful Life." I know it is sappy, but i love it. The one movie i don't want to miss. I record it, but don't always catch it at Christmas time. I've not watched it yet, but probably will. I had a more challenging Christmas this year.

Hope y'all are doing well & healing. :)

Ahh -- how could I forget 'A Christmas Story' -- it's wonderful. I guess b/c it's run so often I forgot it -- I also love 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.' Anything Tim Burton is a treat. And Stroke? I own the original 'Love Affair' - it has more humor than the Cary Grant/Deb Karr version -- but who can resist Cary Grant? Not me...

Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer. Charlie Brown Christmas. Frosty the Snowman. Little Drummer Boy. If I don't see at least one of these, it isn't Christmas..... and now I have an extra special dvd to watch, of the play my daughters were in, A Christmas Carol. My oldest daughter was the Spirit of Christmas Past, younger daughter played Scrooge's niece Evie. Of course, I have to watch it when they aren't around! LOL

Nothing says Christmas like Randy Quaid in Christmas Vacation. I laugh like it's the first time I've seen it every year. Our family favorite we watch on Thanksgiving weekend, without fail: The Santa Clause. I know, not an old classic, but definitely a new one in my book.
