Seriously?!

While we were away a guy stopped to ask Corey (Excy's son, taking care of the place), if we'd take in his horse. He said it was rideable but he couldn't keep it any longer. C explained the Sanctuary isn't an 'open' sanctuary for horses, but for wild mustangs only, and domestic horses wouldn't be welcomed by the 'wild ones,' and we didn't have the resources or land to take in any others, anyway. Apparently the guy didn't like what he heard.

A few days later C was over at the property at dusk and a truck pulling a rusty horse trailer pulled up to the entrance and stopped...when C stepped out of the shadows the truck sped down the road and but then turned around and stopped again at the lane. The same guy and a woman got out of the truck, and he launched into more of his sob story about how they were broke and couldn't afford to feed the horse, how it had a broken leg and couldn't be ridden, and how it needed a home. They had intended to just dump it in the corral and go on their merry way. Knowing it would be in peril and there would be fighting among the mustangs didn't seem to bother them in the least, I guess.

I wish C had gotten their name and number. As annoyed as I was to hear yet another case of someone dumping a helpless animal off on someone -- and it happens all the time, but with horses it's a bigger problem, as you can imagine -- I can think of a dozen ways this innocent horse can be saved, and it sure deserves better than the people it's with now. I hate to think of it with a broken leg, too...

Geez.

Some people aren't fit to own a gerbil.

Sad, sad, sad. Some people don't deserve kids, either. Let's hope those folks don't have any.

I ran an dog rescue for years and saw about everything. Not much of it good though I never had a horse dropped off.
With the economy in tough shape, we will see more of this I fear. Wish I had a thousand acres and a million dollars.

This is so sad and angers me so.
I know that if you go to a vet they sometimes have resources available to direct them. But to just dump an animal makes me ill.

I am petrified of cats. I can't look at them in photos. (yes i go off your site when they are featured) I have a big fat phobia that I have tried to deal with through hypnosis etc to no avail. I tell you this because while I do not care for them per se I would never want harm done to them. People who know of my fear tell me these horrendous stories and I am not only disgusted by the stories but by the humans who would tell them, think nothing of them and assume a fear means abuse is fine.
Ya touched a nerve here for me.....sorry

I hope you find out who they are and can report them....there must be another way for them to "deposit" that poor animal. Like the ASPCA, but maybe they are afraid that they will get into trouble about it's broken leg. I am just sick for that poor horse....I can't stand abuse of any kind.

Oh, this is so sad. I had no idea that people would try to just drop off a horse. This just breaks my heart. Truly, some people shouldn't even be able to take care of a gold fish, gerbil, or even a house plant.

This is horrible, but at least the humans involved did not shoot the horse...

Best Friends Animal Society would probably take this horse. They are no-kill and take in animals from all over. They have all sorts of animals, too. Even birds.

People don't realize that animals are a living and once you have them are a member of the family. The least they could do for that poor animal is find a proper rescue.

Amazing! I'm sure they could call an animal agency or vet for resources on what they could do with this poor animal.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Thanks for dropping by my post...and just to answer your question of where my hubby has gone. Well he's not exactly gone...he works in the next province from us and is on a 3 wk. at work, one wk. at home schedule. It's a grueling job and we get to spend very little time together. (I never know where to put answers to questions!)

Since our new government is in office, we have a special police force to protect animals. I don't know why the regular police cannot look after animals as well, but it seems to be necessary. Reading your story, I guess that's what you also need.
Anyway there are many people who are unfit to possess a pet. More is the pity, for pets are man's best friends.

Sad with the economy I know many are at their wits end; and sad because animals give so much in return only requiring food and water and a little kindness. I often think what would I do with my three cats if I was homeless in the future. I'd want them to stay together, but not sure that would be possible, not that I have much but I put them in my will to be taken care of if my husband and I should die.

It is sad that with the economy people don't have the money to take care of their pets or horses. While I don't fault the couple for not being able to financially take care of the horse, could they have taken the horse to another shelter? It seems like they didn't look into it and were just expecting you to fix their problems without trying another place next. That I don't agree with. His sob story may be true, but don't just dump an animal. Horrible!!

Anyway, I am a new follower from the I love my online friends monday hop. I'd be delighted if you checked out my blog sometime. Have a great Monday!

Horrible, just horrible to dump an animal. Just the thought of anyone doing that makes my stomach churn. I'm in Northern Virginia. About an hour from me is horse country. There have been several stories in the paper about police following up tips and finding horses in sick and starving conditions. These people live in huge homes and swim in society's posh circles but can't feed their horses. Truly sick.

Thank you for stopping by. I hope your illness is in remission and soon gone. Hugs.

I can't even get over this...how do people do this? We have a cat that was abandoned and I couldn't get my head around how someone could just go off and leave her behind with no concern of how she would fend for herself. I can't imagine how someone could do the same with a HORSE! You are a saint.

The least they could do is pay to have the horse humanely euthanized. Having owned horses for several years, I understand the expense, responsibility and commitment. So many of these beautiful creatures end up in such tragic circumstances, especially with today's hard economic times. It's just so sad.
